Everyone knows that the mall is the incubator of sales techniques. Most sales professionals get their start in one, i.e. peddling jeans and junk food to teens. So I tend to stroll the mall in the mornings to check out all of the booths and store fronts before the crowds come in. I call it my “old man mall walking” routine. Here are some of the pictures I took today while strolling through Columbia Mall.
I’ll start with this picture, because it is the one thatĀ surprisedĀ me the most. This is a QR code advertisement aimed at women in the 20-50 age demographic.
I discovered QR codes about 4 years ago when I bought my first Android phone. They have been heavily used in Asia for quite a while. The gist of it is that you use a bar code scanner application on a smart phone to transfer a small amount of digital information such as an email address, phone number, website address, map locations, or text message.
I like to think of my wife as middle of the road when it comes to tech adoption. She has a smart phone, a facebook account, and a twitter account (that she rarely updates.) When I asked her if she would know what to do with this advertisement she said no, but caught on easily when I showed her the bar code scanner application.
Here is an example of one that links to our home page.
Here are two more QR Codes I found.
